How to choose the best bindery style for a design project.

Bindery Styles for Designers:

Spiral Binding

A plastic coil is twisted through the spine after punching a series of holes from one end to the other, up to 24 inches.

Strengths: Pages turn easily, up to 360°. Your project can open flat without wearing on the spine or blocking part of the page. Also works well with tabs and small or large page counts. Very durable.

Project examples: Books, reports, wall calendars, manuals, travel guides, cookbooks, notebooks.

Plastic Comb Binding

This lightweight plastic comb is inserted into holes punched along the edge of your project. It can be bind up to 3 inches of material.

Strengths: Like spiral binding the pages will open easily and can lay flat. Lower cost material, works on up to 425 pages. The comb can be re-opened to add or replace pages.

Project examples: Reports or manuals that require updates.

Wire-O Binding

Similar to plastic comb binding but using double-loop wire, this option is more durable than plastic comb but still not as durable as spiral binding.

Strengths: Professional look. Can insert a special calendar hanger. Pages lay flat. Can include tabs, foldouts, and mixed papers. Images and content will line up across pages when open.

Project examples: Calendars, wall charts, cookbooks, reports, directories, music books, journals, workbooks.

Saddle Stitch Binding

One of the most popular book binding methods. Pages are stapled along the spine after folding, binding the cover and inside pages together and forming a final booklet.

Strengths: Cost effective, fast turnaround time, works with many sizes and formats. Images and content will line up across pages when open.

Project examples: Small soft cover books (from 8 pages up to around 64 pages depending on the paper you use), programs, catalogs, newsletters, direct mail pieces, booklets, small magazines, wall calendars.

Perfect Binding

Pages are glued along the spine after folding, binding the cover and inside pages together. The spine must be at least 1/8″ thick.

Strengths: Professional look that stacks and displays nicely. Flat spines over 1/4″ thick have a printable area for design to make it stand out on a shelf. Works with higher page counts. Covers can be scored.

Project examples: Thicker soft cover books including coffee table books, magazines, catalogs, manuals.
