The Story of Nunalleq

Nunalleq (the Old Village) is a 400-year-old pre-contact Yup’ik settlement that represents the shared lineage of the modern Yupik people. The site has yielded over 200,000 artifacts, making it the most comprehensive record of pre-contact Indigenous life in the world. Sealed in permafrost for centuries, these fragile pieces — including wooden ritual masks, grass basketry, weapons, tools and more — provide an extraordinary window into Yupik history. 

Severe storms like Typhoon Halong in 2025 have caused catastrophic coastal erosion at the site. This places the remaining undiscovered history in immediate danger of being washed into the sea. To fund the critical rescue excavation and conservation efforts, fine-art prints of the site, “Troweling Against Climate Change” by artist Stephanie Harold, are offered by Quinhagak Heritage, Inc. Each purchase contributes $30 directly to rescue efforts.
